He ent from Ohio west, to Illinois, 2 CONC when that state was a territoy, and died at Parsons, Kansas, on Christmas 2 CONC morning, 1890 aged 81 years. The ancestors of the family came from 2 CONC Germany, and became established in Pennsylvania. The great- grandfather 2 CONC of James G. and two of his brothers served in the War of 1812. Four of 2 CONC his brothers went to California in 1849, and when the Civil War broke 2 CONC out, they enlisted in defense of the Union. 2 CONT 2 CONT Jacob was united in marriage with Mary Sawann, who was born in Tennessee 2 CONC about 1810, and was probably a relatice of ex-Gov. Swanm of that State. 2 CONC She died in Parsons, Kansas, in 1881. Ten children were born to this 2 CONC union. 2 CONT 2 CONT James G. Utt attended the common schools of Illinois, and began to work 2 CONC at the age of fourteen years. During the was he remaindedat home and 2 CONC cared for the family, as all could not go to the front. He afterward 2 CONC spent seven or eight years in the lead mines of Northern Illinois and 2 CONC Wisconsin. In 1871, with his wife and six children, he drove through to 2 CONC Cowley County, Kansas, accompanied by another family, whichlocated in 2 CONC Chautauqua county. He camped on his present home farm about October6, 2 CONC 1871, and encountered the heaviest rainstorm he ever witnessed. The land 2 CONC inCedar township on whivh he lovated, in Section 16, Township 34, Range 2 CONC 8, East,was school land, and was appraised at $3 per acre. Owing to a 2 CONC very high hill near by, known as Lookout Maountian, the Valley, for three 2 CONC miles to the southwest and east, was known as Lookout Valley, and in this 2 CONC he located. 2 CONT They farmed south of Jerseyville, Ill., divoriced Sept 25, 1872 Jersey 2 CONC Co., Ill. Mary and younger daughters moved to Parsons, Kansas. Mr. Sartin was the first settler in this valley, 2 CONC and now resides but half mile distant; in the early days he was a trapper 2 CONC and hunter, but his present vocation is that of a minister. Mr. Utt too 2 CONC the south half off Section 16, and has since purchased the north half, 2 CONC from Amos Jent and Mr. Bacon. He came to this county a poor man, and his 2 CONC first years here were marked by unceasing toil. He build the front part 2 CONC of his present house of native lumber, whichwas sawed in a mill owned vy 2 CONC Mr. Pollardm now of Cedar Vale. It was 16 by 24 feet in dimensions, which 2 CONC was considered large in those days. Into this the family moved before the 2 CONC roof was put on. The shingles were made of native lumber, and were sawed 2 CONC by Mr. Phelps, in Otter Township. They were made by hand, and Mr.Utt 2 CONC assisted in the work. The house has since been been greatly enlargedand 2 CONC isnow a comfortable size and very well arranged. Mr Utt set out an 2 CONC orchard in 1872- the first orchard in the valley- buying the trees for 50 2 CONC cents apeice, at Oswego. Although there was no timber on the place when 2 CONC he took it, a considerable amount has since grown and the cottonwood 2 CONC trees have suplied fuel for the past ten years. Mr Utt built a large 2 CONC amount of stone fence in 1873, 1864 and 1875, of stonespicked up on the 2 CONC farm. He also set out about three-fourths of a mileof hedge, and the 2 CONC remainder of the farm was well fenced with wire. He began raising wheat 2 CONC in the fall of 1872, sowing at that time 15 acres. He broke the land with 2 CONC oxen, for which he had traded for horses, using them until 1874. He broke 2 CONC 40 acres of his own the first year, and also considerable land for his 2 CONC neighbors. The early settlers were very sociable and often made trips to 2 CONC town together, returningwith freight for country stores, etc. All the 2 CONC settlers were then engaed in freighting, more or less, as it was about 2 CONC the only way in which to makeany money. Mr. Utt is now engaged in mixed 2 CONC farming, raising cor, wheat, oats, alfalfa, and Kaffir corn, in rotation. 2 CONC He raises many cattle and higs earch year, and has been very successful 2 CONC in every line of his business. Mr. Utt was united in marriage, before the 2 CONC war, with Mary Randle, who was born in Jersey County, Illinois, in June, 2 CONC 1838, and is a daughter of James G. and Jane (White) Randle. Her father 2 CONC was from North Carolina, and died in 1879, age seventy years. Hermother 2 CONC died in 1876m aged seventy-one years. Mr. and Mrs. Randle had the 2 CONC following children: Joseph, who lives half a mile east of James G. Utt's 2 CONC place, justacross the county line; Mary; Susie, deceased; and Henry N., 2 CONC who resideds at Hillsboro, Illinois, and is county reasurer of Montogmery 2 CONC county. Mr & Mrs. Utt who lives north of Cedar Vale; George, who is at 2 CONC home; James, of Harvey county,Kansas; Clara, who died at teh age of 4; 2 CONC Bert, who is in Harvey county, Kansas; Walter J., who lives near his 2 CONC parents, is married, and has one son, Adrain' Charles R., who lives in 2 CONC Chautauqua county, Kansas, and has tow children- Guy and Mildred; and 2 CONC John L. who is living at home. Mr. Utt became an Odd Fellow in 1863, at 2 CONC Elash, Illinois, and is now a member of Lodge No. 151, at Cedar Vale. MRs 2 CONC Utt is a member f the Rebekahs. Nathan Chambers built and owned a 2 CONC blockhouse known as Chamber's Fort in Summerfield of Union Groves near 2 CONC what is now Lebanon.This was needed by the settlers as protection against 2 CONC the Indians. Nathan was living in St. Clair County, Illinois in 1806. In 2 CONC 1811 he took out a clain for Section 33, and his son-in-law took out a 2 CONC claim for Section 34.
